Why Self medication is dangerous?

July 9, 2009

Antibiotics are prescribed for many diseases. Antibiotics are effective against skin infections, bacterial infections, sinusitis, ear infections, throat infections and much more. Often Doctors prescribe us Antibiotics when we are suffering from common cold. But common cold is caused by Virus. You may wonder how antibiotics can cure viral infections. Antibiotics can cure viral infections to some extent. Dosage is very important while taking antibiotics. Over dose may lead to several serious side effects. Likewise single dose will never help in curing the disease. Normally Doctors won’t suggest single dose for your infection. It’s true that single dose will do nothing for your infection. Most of the time single doses cannot cure a particular infection and infection may become immune to the medicine leading to “antibiotic resistance”. Hence it’s very important to take the full course of prescription. You may feel better after taking two to three doses but it’s important for you to take the full course for 100% effectiveness of the medicine. Self medication is also harmful. Some may take the same antibiotics for all kinds of infections. It’s highly dangerous and will lead to so many complications. When you are sick do visit a doctor and strictly follow his instructions for speedy recovery.
